Building Smarter, More Accessible E-Learning: Two Major Milestones This Year

This year, our technical training eLearning has taken a significant leap forward. We've not only updated our mandatory courses but also introduced a new adaptive learning model to enhance the learning experience.

Accessibility Built Into Every Course

Accessibility is no longer an afterthought – it’s the foundation of every new course we create.

We’ve developed a new eLearning template that incorporates a comprehensive suite of accessibility and inclusion features as standard. This means that every new course we produce, including Safety Training Plus Human Factors, Fuel Tank Safety, and EWIS Levels 1 and 2, is designed to meet the requirements of the upcoming European Accessibility Act. By building accessibility in from the start, we’re ensuring compliance while creating a more inclusive and engaging learning experience for everyone.

The new template includes:

• Clear, highly readable typography using modern sans-serif fonts.
• Increased line and letter spacing to reduce visual strain.
• Consistent, high-contrast colour palettes aligned with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
• Meaningful alternative text for images, icons, and interactive elements.
• Full keyboard, mouse, and touchscreen support for all interaction elements.
• Stable, predictable page layouts with logical navigation and a dedicated “How to Use This Course” guide.
• Plain, straightforward language, with acronyms explained and glossaries provided for technical terminology.
• Content organised into clear, bite-sized sections to improve focus and knowledge retention.
• Screen reader-friendly content with a logical reading order and minimal decorative distractions.
• Provide c[JS2.1]Clear instructional guidance whenever learners encounter new interaction types, so no learner is left guessing.
• Audio narration and captions throughout every course.

A Smarter Approach to Mandatory Training

Our second major innovation is adaptive learning, eliminating unnecessary training for experienced employees and saving time for both staff and organisations.

For engineers in particular, mandatory training often meant repeating large sections of familiar content, taking valuable time away from their core responsibilities.

This adaptive model is already live across Safety Training Plus, Human Factors, Fuel Tank Safety, and EWIS Levels 1 and 2 eLearning courses.

Each section now begins with a short diagnostic assessment. By answering a series of targeted questions, learners demonstrate what they already know. Based on their responses, the course automatically identifies any knowledge gaps and directs them only to the content they need to revisit.

The result is a learning experience that is:
• Personalised to each learner
• Faster to complete
• Focused on genuine knowledge gaps
• Fully compliant with regulatory requirements

There’s no unnecessary repetition, no wasted time, and no compromise on learning outcomes.

Looking Ahead

These two initiatives represent more than incremental improvements – they establish a new foundation for all future digital learning.
By embedding accessibility into every course and introducing intelligent, adaptive learning pathways, we’ve created training that is more inclusive, more engaging, and significantly more efficient.

As we continue to develop new digital learning products, every course will be built on this modern, accessible, and intelligent framework – ensuring we deliver high-quality learning experiences that meet the needs of every learner while supporting the demands of the business.
